The writing desk that remembers your story

By chapter twelve, every writer learns the same lesson: the story outgrows your head. The protagonist's eye colour quietly changes, the subplot you swore you closed is still open, and the research tab you need died in a browser crash an hour ago.

AGIT is a free desktop writing studio that takes over the remembering. The manuscript, the outline, the notes, the story bible and the AI helper live in one workspace on your own computer — and the computer does the recall. Ask it who owns the tavern in chapter three. It knows. It read the chapter.

There is no subscription, there is no account, and your book never has to leave your machine. You can write a whole novel on a plane.

One desk, the whole project

Chat on one side, the manuscript in the middle, the outline and boards a click away. The AI chat is not a stranger: it reads your project, so "does this contradict chapter four?" is a real question with a real answer.

Everything autosaves, snapshots keep yesterday's version of every scene, and the draft exports to DOCX, EPUB, PDF, Markdown or plain text whenever you feel like holding it.

The field, in a few words

Writing software comes in two flavours: a one-time-purchase desk with no AI, or a subscription web service with AI and a meter. Here is the short version of where AGIT stands among the tools people actually name — Scrivener, NovelCrafter, Sudowrite and friends. The long, fair version, with links and the things they do better, lives on the comparison page.

The one-line shape of it: most writing software is either a subscription with AI attached or an editor with none. AGIT is a free desk with the AI bolted on your way — and a memory that spans the whole project, which is the part nobody else ships for free.

Four ways into the same web

The workspace, honestly photographed

No mockups, no borrowed screenshots. This is the desk: the chat where conversations live, the editor where prose sits, the outline where structure holds, and the boards where the mess waits.

Fiction, for the long haul

Novels drown in their own details. AGIT keeps characters, locations, items and plot points in a living compendium, suggests entries from scenes you have already written, and lets you drag chapters around when the story disagrees with the plan.

What fiction mode does.

Non-fiction that keeps its spine

Essays, guides, business plans, whitepapers, the thesis you keep not starting. The outline holds the argument, the boards hold the clippings, and the templates hold your hand at 1 a.m.

What non-fiction mode does.

Research with a local index

Import documents, scans and notes; index them on your own machine; search them instantly; run computations and chart what matters. External tools plug in through MCP when you want them and stay unplugged when you do not.

What research mode does.

Role-play, for work and for fun

Interview your own characters before they derail chapter nine, give each one a voice profile, and let the dialogue run. Or forget the deadline for an evening and let the spider run the dungeon.

What role-play mode does.

Your files, your machine

The web stays in your house

Projects, notes and research sit in a folder on your own disk — Documents\AGIT by default, movable whenever you like. Autosave and snapshots stand guard. Uninstalling the app never deletes your writing; the folder is yours.

Want a backup in the cloud? Sync runs through your own Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive account, encrypted before it leaves the machine. We never hold your files hostage, because we never hold your files.

Telemetry is opt-in, asked once, quiet afterwards. No advertising trackers, no social pixels. The privacy policy is short on purpose.

AI on your terms

Bring your own API key for the big cloud models, or run a local model through Ollama or an imported GGUF file and keep every token on your machine. Different jobs can use different models: the clever one for drafting, a cheap one for the chores. Usage tracking keeps the bill visible before it becomes a surprise.

Cloud models stay switched off until you configure them. The writing itself works fully offline.

Built like it matters

The numbers we are proud of

  • More than ten thousand automated tests stand between your manuscript and a bad update. Losing a draft is the one bug we refuse to ship.
  • 20 interface languages, from Arabic to Japanese to Polish. The app speaks yours.
  • 11 themes, from a quiet reading room to a hacker terminal. Writing at 2 a.m. should not feel like an office.
  • 1 price: zero. Free to use, free to share with your writing group. The audiobook exporter, the OCR import, MCP support and the Python scratchpad are all included — there is no paywall to hold things behind.

Who AGIT is for

Writers, mostly

  • Novelists with three binders of lore and a fourth living in their head.
  • Essayists and non-fiction writers who want structure more than applause.
  • Researchers who like their sources indexed and their index local.
  • Role-players and game masters, between campaigns or between chapters.
  • Anyone who wants AI help without handing the manuscript to a stranger.

If the list misses you, tell us what you write. Feature requests reach the studio directly — it is a small web here.

Questions people actually ask

Is my novel sent anywhere?

No. Writing, planning and export are fully offline. The only things that ever touch the network are the AI providers you configure yourself, the optional sync to your own cloud storage, and opt-in error reporting that starts switched off.

Is it really free? What is the catch?

It is free to use and free to share, under a licence with ethical use restrictions. There is no trial timer, no feature paywall, no credit meter inside the app. The studio sells nothing here — this page is the storefront.

Will it run on my computer?

Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit, about 2 GB of disk space. That is the whole list. macOS builds are planned; today AGIT is honest about being a Windows citizen.

What if I want to leave?

Export everything to DOCX, EPUB, PDF, HTML, Markdown or plain text and walk away with your words. An app should earn its keep every day you open it — not keep your book as collateral.

Come in, the web is warm
